Fountain County

A Brief History

Fountain County was founded in 1825 and named after Major James Fountain, a Kentuckian killed at the Battle of Maumee in 1790. Settlers came into Fountain County from Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania and other Eastern States.

Originally consisting of five Townships: Shawnee, Troy, Richland, Wabash & Cain, six new Townships were added from 1826 to 1841 - Jackson, Davis, Logan, Millcreek, Fulton and Van Buren.

Mills were the first industry providing lumber and ground grains. The Wabash and Erie Canal provided great economic growth from its completion to Covington in 1846 until the railroads took its place in 1875.

Currently Fountain County is a rural farming County with several small towns and communities with friendly people and quiet atmospheres. We hope you will visit us and enjoy the many things we have to offer.

Visit the towns of Fountain County. They are small, interesting and many have quaint shops with knowledgable owners who enjoy your visits.

You can learn a lot about the area, the history and antiques just by stopping in these shops and engaging the owners in conversation. Truth be told, one of the reasons many people go into the antique business is the desire to talk history with people from inside and outside the area.
