Cates - Once a bustling community
Now a quiet spot in the road.Founded around 1887 Cates was a bustling spot on the railroad. Around 1890 a narrow gauge railroad, known as the Cloverleaf Division was extended through Cates. It was eventually converted to standard gauge and became a part of the Norfolk and Western Line. In its heyday Cates had over 20 businesses. Coal mining also played a big part in Cates History. In 1923 a canning factory was erected and canned tomatoes, and beans. A fertilizer distributing plant nows rests on the site occupied by the canning factory.
