Antiquing in Western Indiana
by: Carol Ann Freese
House With the Lions Antiques
306 4th St.
Covington, IN 47932

The color change and the Midwest harvest brings about an excitement in the antique world. Fall marks the height of the antique season. The numerous festivals, flea markets, antique shows and the end of the year auctions, bring out many hidden treasures, unearthed "finds" and scores of people.

The 60's and 70's collectibles craze has affected most everyone. A collectible is something that appeals to more than a few people and can be resold There now seems to be a collector for everything. A scan of the trade papers shows lists of people in search of some unusual items including match book covers, and Star Trek toys, McDonald's premiums, political buttons, and much more. Many dealers specialize in specific items. The true antique is something that is at least one hundred years old - 1895 - and is usually handcrafted. Although a car need only be twenty-five years old to be considered antique.

One point to remember is that just because it is old does not mean it is valuable. The key to finding, buying, and selling is finding the right market. Some things run hot and cold so it pays to stay attuned to what is selling. This can be done by going to local shows, talking to dealers and reading all available materials. Harry Rinker, one of the leading writers, researchers and authorities in the field says, "never, never buy something when it's hot. Either buy before it gets hot, or wait 'till it cools off." Needless to say, if you are going to invest hundreds of dollars in an item you need to know as much about it as possible. This brings us back to the key word - KNOWLEDGE. A collector or buyer should do research and one very simple means of doing this is to talk to your local dealers. Most dealers are happy to share their knowledge and information. Information is an investment of time and is the key to buying safely. The exciting thing about the antique world is that there is always more to learn. It is a true living history lesson.

Fountain County has a wealth of history and market to offer. Attica, Williamsport and Covington have many fine shops and dealers and there are numerous flea markets on U.S. 41 during the Parke County Covered Bridge Festival. A background knowledge of the area and its settlement helps in finding true local antiques. The renowned LaTourette coverlets made in the Southern part of the county as well as the local crockery, farming tools, quilts and ephemera (paper) are eagerly sought by many.

Current hot items include the ever versatile washstand, glass butter churns, linens, Depression glass, holiday items (especially Christmas and Halloween), fountain pens, World War II clothing, old photos and quality Victorian furniture.

Antiques are a great way to accessorize your home, a sound investment and a real joy. Whether it be an item that reminds you of your grandparent's r simply something that we remember growing up with, antiques touch a hidden part of our inner selves and reflect our personalities. Enjoy!
